The Butte College men's cross country team won its first-ever Northern California Championship title on November 7 at Toro Park in Salinas. Scoring 83 points, Butte's men outpaced tough competitors, including Hartnell, De Anza, and American River, securing their historic win and qualifying for the 3C2A State Championship in Fresno in two weeks.
After a strong season within the Golden Valley Conference, Butte College came into the race with high expectations. Freshman Stephan Chapdelaine led the team with a second-place individual finish, while Phillip Logan and Mark Velazquez-Patino placed in the top ten to boost the team's performance leading to a Regional championship—a title not won by the program since the small and large school divisions merged in 1984. Their success represents the first major title for Butte College cross country since their "Small School" title win in 1979.
While Butte's men celebrated their historic victory, the women's team gave an impressive showing of their own. They finished in ninth place with 175 points, with two individual qualifiers—Jen Johnson and Paulina Rias—securing their spots for the upcoming state championship.
With their Northern California title in hand, the Butte College men's cross country team heads to the 3C2A State Championship on November 23 in Fresno, aiming to build on their remarkable season.
