Butte College Welcomes New Vice President for Student Services

Vice President Imelda Simos-ValdezButte College is excited to announce the appointment of Imelda Simos-Valdez as the new vice president for student services. With a career spanning more than 30 years in higher education, Simos-Valdez brings extensive experience and a student-centered approach to Butte College. She began her role on November 4.

"I’m incredibly excited to assume the role of vice president for student services at Butte College because it presents an opportunity to impact student success and equity at a pivotal time in their educational journeys,” said Simos-Valdez. “I look forward to collaborating with a dedicated team to enhance existing programs and initiatives, ensuring that every student has the support they need to thrive academically and personally.”

Simos-Valdez comes to Butte College from Bakersfield College, where she recently served as interim vice president for student services, overseeing a comprehensive suite of student support services. Her leadership, which focused on supporting students from enrollment through graduation, helped increase retention rates and graduation numbers through expanded resources and support.

She began her career in student services at California State University, Los Angeles, before moving to lead the Center for Student Access and Success at CSU, Bakersfield, securing grants and bolstering outreach efforts aimed at elevating student readiness and retention. She went on to Bakersfield College, where she served as executive director of categorical programs. In addition to her extensive experience, Simos-Valdez holds a master’s degree in educational administration from California State University, Bakersfield.

Now, Simos-Valdez sees Butte College as a place where she can expand on her mission to “create an inclusive and empowering atmosphere where every student can achieve their goals.” She notes, “I was drawn to Butte College because of its strong commitment to student success, equity and community engagement. The college's reputation for fostering a supportive environment aligns perfectly with my values as an educational leader.”

As Butte College’s vice president for student services, Simos-Valdez has an overarching goal of creating a supportive environment where all students can thrive. Simos-Valdez's vision for Butte College includes a strong focus on holistic student support driven by data-informed decision-making and collaboration across departments. She aims to create a responsive, student-centered ecosystem, which she describes as “an inclusive and empowering atmosphere where every student can achieve their goals.”

Guleff. “I’m confident her leadership will empower our students to reach their fullest potential.”
